Hate Cleaning Metal Window Blinds?
Cleaning metal window blinds is probably at the top of most homemakers hate list.
As a matter of fact my wife just came in from the outside doing some yard work complaining that it was hot. I told her I was writing this article on cleaning mini blinds and her comment was "I hate It," I'd rather pull weeds.
I think a lot of people would feel the same, but unfortunately It's one of those jobs that needs to be done every once in awhile.
Basically there are three way to clean these blinds:
- Have them cleaned for you
- clean and pollute the air
- soap and water cleaning
Have Them Cleaned For You
There are a number of companies that specialize in cleaning window blinds. Most of them use an Ultrasonic cleaning system to clean the blinds.
They will come to your house or office and take down the blinds. They then soak the blinds in a special ultrasonic bath that does a great job of removing all the dust and built up grime. Usually this is done on site in their specially equipped truck.
The clean and shiny blinds are then hung back up so they can collect some more dust. Remember horizontal blinds have that dust collection "gene" in them so there is no getting around the dust problem.
I wonder if there were horizontal blinds in the bio-sphere? If anyone knows let me know.
The problem with this type of cleaning metal window blinds is the companies that do this service are far and few between. I tried to find a listing of companies but didn't have much luck. Here's a link to one of those companies.

Clean and Pollute the Air
This is the type of cleaning metal window blinds that most of us are familiar with. You simply close the blinds so that it's fairly flat and then you take a cloth or swiffer and knock off all the accumulated dust and let it float of in the air to land on the blind you just cleaned before this one.
This is not the best method but it is by far the fastest and easiest. Even by using a vacuum sweeper and hose you still put a lot of dust into the air causing those with allergies to cry out for relief.
Soap and Water
This is by far the hardest and most difficult to do but it is also does the best job and is easy on the environment.
Take the blinds down and lay them on a old piece of carpet in the drive way or any outdoor flat area. Pour a couple of drops of a good car soap in a bucket of luke warm water, take a soft brush and brush or clean the blinds with the solution, making sure you turn the blinds over and get the backs.
Then clean rinse the blinds with your hose and hang them over a chair to dry. When dry reinstall the blinds, have a cup of coffee or whatever you prefer and sit back and gaze with rapture at a job well done.
I know this is a lot of work but it does the job of cleaning metal window blinds extremely well and only need be done once or twice a year. Think of it as allergy prevention.
